Chapter Seven
TWO DAYS LATER, Jack found himself again on the road. But this time there was a big difference: he was at the wheel of a police car, a black Chrysler with âIllinois State Policeâ conservatively stenciled on its sides. He was wearing a uniform, too, as were the other two occupants of the car. They were heading west, back toward South Dakota, back where it had all started.
It was hard to believe how radically things had changed in the last couple of days. He had arrived at the Undergroundâs headquarters with many reservations about the organizationâmost of them, he had to admit, based upon his growing dislike of Lars Hellinger. (And most of that, he admitted further, because of Hellingerâs manner with Linda. Hellinger was more than polite toward her, after that first encounterâmuch more, it seemed to Jack. But Linda seemed to find him charming, so Jack didnât feel he could say anything. And that bothered him all the more.)
The headquarters and its personnel had exceeded his expectations. As soon as theyâd arrived, Jack had run into Harry Nichols and Mike DePrina. Theyâd greeted each other with great back-slappings and handshakes, and almost at once Jack found his spirits lifting.
He admitted to himself now that he had been afraid of his growing mistrust of the Underground group; afraid because the group actually represented about the only opportunity there seemed to beâunless one counted the strange Jackalsâfor any opposition to the invaders, and he didnât want to see his illusions about an effective Underground shattered. But the more his old friends showed him of the place, the more confident he became.
âHow big is this place?â he asked at one point.
âAbout as big as a three-story mansion, with all the floors laid out side by side,â was Harry Nicholsâ reply. âThe guy who owned this built deepâreally deepâand planned for a long stay underground This place seems to have been stocked for a stay of up to five years. It even includes hydroponic air-purifying equipment. It was designed to stand anything but a direct ground-blast hit.â
âOf course, weâve made a lot of changes,â DePrina added. âWe stole a lot of equipment from the University of Chicago, and we managed to get some of our own stuff out of the shops in Cicero. Weâve got a pretty extensive lab set up down here now.â
Lars Hellinger, who was acting as an official guide, added, âWeâre dedicated to a two-pronged attack: subversion from within, and scientific advances here. Weâre hoping that eventually weâll be able to lay our hands on one of their personal force-fields or one of those handguns. If we can get one of those in here and find out what makes it tickâ!â
âWhat Iâd like to know is where the invaders got their stuff,â said Nicols. âThe technology hinted at, just in the creation of a force-field, much less one you could carry around with you and still have normal body freedom, must be fantastic. And the implications! Think for a minute about what a force-field is.
