Chapter Seven

TWO DAYS LATER, Jack found himself again on the road. But this time there was a big difference: he was at the wheel of a police car, a black Chrysler with “Illinois State Police” conservatively stenciled on its sides. He was wearing a uniform, too, as were the other two occupants of the car. They were heading west, back toward South Dakota, back where it had all started.

It was hard to believe how radically things had changed in the last couple of days. He had arrived at the Underground’s headquarters with many reservations about the organization—most of them, he had to admit, based upon his growing dislike of Lars Hellinger. (And most of that, he admitted further, because of Hellinger’s manner with Linda. Hellinger was more than polite toward her, after that first encounter—much more, it seemed to Jack. But Linda seemed to find him charming, so Jack didn’t feel he could say anything. And that bothered him all the more.)

The headquarters and its personnel had exceeded his expectations. As soon as they’d arrived, Jack had run into Harry Nichols and Mike DePrina. They’d greeted each other with great back-slappings and handshakes, and almost at once Jack found his spirits lifting.

He admitted to himself now that he had been afraid of his growing mistrust of the Underground group; afraid because the group actually represented about the only opportunity there seemed to be—unless one counted the strange Jackals—for any opposition to the invaders, and he didn’t want to see his illusions about an effective Underground shattered. But the more his old friends showed him of the place, the more confident he became.

“How big is this place?” he asked at one point.

“About as big as a three-story mansion, with all the floors laid out side by side,” was Harry Nichols’ reply. “The guy who owned this built deep—really deep—and planned for a long stay underground This place seems to have been stocked for a stay of up to five years. It even includes hydroponic air-purifying equipment. It was designed to stand anything but a direct ground-blast hit.”

“Of course, we’ve made a lot of changes,” DePrina added. “We stole a lot of equipment from the University of Chicago, and we managed to get some of our own stuff out of the shops in Cicero. We’ve got a pretty extensive lab set up down here now.”

Lars Hellinger, who was acting as an official guide, added, “We’re dedicated to a two-pronged attack: subversion from within, and scientific advances here. We’re hoping that eventually we’ll be able to lay our hands on one of their personal force-fields or one of those handguns. If we can get one of those in here and find out what makes it tick—!”

“What I’d like to know is where the invaders got their stuff,” said Nicols. “The technology hinted at, just in the creation of a force-field, much less one you could carry around with you and still have normal body freedom, must be fantastic. And the implications! Think for a minute about what a force-field is.
